Ludlow, the town at the base of Okemo Mountain, grew up around wool and textile mills powered by the Black River in the 1800s, and its brick mill buildings still line the village today. The ski area on Okemo Mountain opened in 1955, but it was a major resort expansion in the 1980s that transformed Ludlow from a fading mill town into one of southern Vermont's busiest ski destinations. Okemo has stayed known as an especially family-friendly mountain, with wide, groomed trails and slopeside lodging built directly into the resort village. Ski trips to Okemo are often paired with a stop in Stratton, about 40 minutes west.
