Providence was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, who had been banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his religious views and settled at the meeting of the Providence and Seekonk rivers. The city grew into an industrial center through the 1800s and early 1900s, powered by textile mills and jewelry manufacturing, but by the late 20th century many of its downtown mill buildings sat empty. A major redevelopment starting in the 1990s — including uncovering rivers that had been paved over and building WaterFire, the seasonal bonfire installation on the waterways — helped earn Providence its nickname as the "Renaissance City." Today the city's College Hill neighborhood, home to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, sits just above the restored downtown. Trips to Providence are often paired with a stop in Bristol, about 20 minutes south.
